đż Sustainability & Local Makers
At Our Place in Portland, we believe the best holidays are full of local flavour, the kind you can taste, touch, and feel good about.
From the coffee in your cup to the cookies in your welcome basket, everything we provide has a Dorset story behind it.
As winners of the Litter Free Dorset Sustainable Business Award, weâre proud to champion small, eco-conscious suppliers who share our values. Together weâre showing that you can enjoy comfort and luxury while treading lightly on the planet. đ

đȘ Butter & Bloom
Meet Katie, a mum, home baker, and maker of sourdough and butter on the Isle of Portland. What began in her kitchen as a way to feed her family wholesome, nourishing food has grown into Butter & Bloom, a local favourite known for its small-batch sourdough and handmade cookies. Using simple, honest ingredients, including free-range eggs from the farm opposite her, everything is baked with care and love, from her family to yours.
đ Dorset Sea Salt Co.
Harvested right here on Portland using seawater from Chesil Beach, Dorset Sea Salt captures the raw purity of our coastline. Every crystal tells the story of our sea air and coastal heritage.
đ± Clipper Teas
Founded in a Dorset kitchen back in 1984, Clipper has grown into a global name with local roots. Their teas and hot chocolate are still blended in Beaminster, Dorset, always organic, fair, and delicious.
đ§ New Forest Spring Water
As local as we could get! Bottled amidst the peaceful woodlands of the New Forest, this pure spring water reflects the simplicity and freshness of nature.
â»ïž Serious Tissues
Made in the UK from 100% recycled paper, Serious Tissues products are plastic-free, chemical-free, and zero-waste. Theyâre proof that small swaps (like your loo roll!) can make a big impact.
By choosing local, sustainable, and ethical suppliers, weâre not just stocking shelves â weâre supporting people, preserving our planet, and sharing a taste of what makes Dorset so special.
Your stay helps support these small businesses and keeps our local community thriving. Thank you for being part of that story. đ
At Our Place in Portland, we believe a great stay starts with feeling welcome, comfortable and well-informed.
Our Victorian coastal cottage has been thoughtfully restored with character and comfort in mind. As a traditional three-storey cottage, it may not suit all accessibility needs, but weâre always happy to talk things through so guests can decide if itâs the right fit.
We provide detailed descriptions, photos and guidance across our website, social media and booking platforms so guests know exactly what to expect before they arrive.
If you have any questions or specific requirements, weâre always happy to help before you book.
Our Place in Portland is a traditional three-storey cottage:
Due to the nature of the building, the cottage may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility.
We welcome a wide range of guests, including:
We aim to create a relaxed, respectful and home-from-home environment where guests can properly switch off and feel at ease.
We know that clear communication makes all the difference, so we provide:
Weâre always just a message away if you need anything.
While we are not a purpose-built accessible property, we focus on making the experience as easy and inclusive as possible through:
Weâre continually learning and making small improvements based on guest feedback.
We aim to balance comfort, sustainability and accessibility in a way that respects both our guests and the character of the cottage.
If thereâs something that would help make your stay easier or more enjoyable, weâd genuinely love to hear from you.
We believe travel should leave a place better than it was found.
At Our Place in Portland, we aim to support the local community, reduce our environmental impact and encourage guests to experience the area in a slower, more thoughtful way.
We work with local suppliers wherever possible, from Dorset-based food and drink to small independent businesses, helping to keep spending within the local economy.
We encourage guests to explore Portland on foot, with the South West Coast Path just moments from the door, and to discover the islandâs natural beauty in ways that respect its landscape and wildlife.
Within the cottage, we prioritise low-waste choices, refillable products and reducing single-use items, alongside thoughtful touches that support a more sustainable stay.
We also share local recommendations that help guests connect more deeply with Portland, from independent cafés to outdoor experiences, supporting businesses that care about the place as much as we do.
Our approach also considers the wider impact of travel. We encourage low-impact activities, mindful use of resources and respect for the local environment. We are also conscious of energy use within the cottage and continue to look for ways to reduce our overall environmental footprint over time.
We were awarded for our sustainability approach, showing our commitment to creating a positive impact for guests and the local area.
